What Is Road Risk Insurance?

Road Risk Insurance is the most common type of Motor Trade Insurance and provides essential cover for traders who drive vehicles as part of their business activities.

Unlike standard car insurance, this cover allows motor traders to drive customer and stock vehicles in the course of business. This may include collecting vehicles, returning customer cars, transporting vehicles between sites, attending auctions, or carrying out test drives.

Road Risk Insurance

What's Covered Under a Road Risks Policy?

Road Risk Insurance provides protection when you or an authorised driver operates vehicles for motor trade purposes. The exact cover available depends on the level of protection selected. It can typically cover:

  • Customer vehicles while being driven for business purposes
  • Stock vehicles owned by your business
  • Vehicle collections and deliveries
  • Test drives and vehicle demonstrations
  • Travel to and from auctions
  • Vehicles temporarily in your custody or control

As with any insurance policy, cover limits, driver restrictions and vehicle eligibility will vary depending on the insurer and policy selected. If you need protection beyond Road Risk Insurance, a Motor Trade Combined Insurance policy could be a better fit.

Levels of Road Risk Cover

Third Party Only

Third Party Only is the minimum level of cover required by law. It covers damage or injury caused to other people, vehicles or property while you are driving for motor trade purposes. However, it does not cover damage to the vehicle you are driving or any repairs you may need to make following an accident.

Third Party Fire and Theft

Third Party Fire and Theft provides the same protection as Third Party Only while also covering vehicles in your care if they are stolen or damaged by fire. This can help protect you against some of the most common risks faced by motor traders when vehicles are left unattended or stored overnight.

Comprehensive Cover

Comprehensive cover offers the highest level of protection and can cover the vehicle you are driving following an accident, regardless of fault. It also includes the third-party, fire and theft benefits provided by the lower levels of cover, giving broader protection for day-to-day motor trade activities.

It’s important to note that insurers usually cover the trade value of a vehicle rather than its retail sale value. The exact level of cover and any exclusions will depend on your insurer and policy terms.

Who Needs Road Risk Insurance?

Road Risk Insurance is designed for motor trade businesses that regularly drive or handle vehicles in connection with their work, providing essential cover while vehicles are on the road. This includes:

  • Vehicle dealers and car sales businesses that buy, sell and test drive vehicles
  • Mobile mechanics who travel to customers and drive vehicles as part of their work
  • Vehicle repair specialists carrying out servicing, maintenance and road testing
  • MOT testing centres that need to move and assess customer vehicles
  • Breakdown and recovery operators transporting and driving vehicles
  • Vehicle valeting businesses that collect, deliver or relocate customer vehicles
  • Bodyshops and accident repair centres conducting repairs and post-repair road tests

If your work involves driving vehicles that you own, sell or hold on behalf of customers, Road Risk Insurance is likely to be an essential requirement.
